It goes without saying that drivers and cyclists are supposed to share the road. It also goes without saying that this doesn't always happen.

As a cyclist, you should never assume that a driver has your best interests in mind. Instead, it's imperative to always go the extra mile in regard to your safety and protection.

While there are many things you can do to improve your safety as a cyclist, here are four things you can do the next time you get on your bike:

  • Use the bicycle lane: When available, there's no safer place to ride than a bicycle lane. There's no guarantee that a vehicle will never drive into this lane, but they aren't supposed to. When a dedicated lane is unavailable, it's safer to drive in traffic than on the shoulder of the road or sidewalk.
  • Watch for opening doors: It's not just moving vehicles that can cause an accident. A parked vehicle is just as dangerous, as a driver or passenger could open a door into your path of travel.
  • Make eye contact: You can't make eye contact with every driver on the road, but you can selectively do so based on your situation, location and what's happening around you. When you make eye contact, there's no question about whether or not the driver knows you're there.
  • Watch for right turning vehicles: As a driver prepares to make a right turn, it's possible they could lose sight of you in their blind spot. This is a particularly important tip to follow when approaching an intersection in a city setting.

It's these types of tips that will give you peace of mind when cycling. However, don't let these give you a false sense of security. Even the safest and most experienced cyclists are at risk of an accident.

If you're injured in a car-bike accident, move out of harm's way if possible, administer first aid and call 911 for help. Depending on your situation, you may be able to take photos of the accident scene and your injuries.

Once you receive treatment, you'll have a clear understanding of the impact of the accident on your health and future. This will prepare you to take the appropriate steps in holding the negligent party responsible.
